A Passion for the Outdoors

In 1945, World War II was at an end and metal production was skyrocketing. A small company named Hetteen Hoist & Derrick produced unique machines for farmers. This line of work was naturally seasonal and the men engaged in their passion for the outdoors during the off-season. In the winter, people had to use skis or snowshoes to cover the distances required to get to key hunting and fishing spots. The men behind the company created a snowmobile for their personal use, but it quickly gained interest among those who saw it.

 

The Creation of the Company

By 1960, the company was renamed Polaris® and had already created hundreds of snowmobiles. Around this time, snowmobiles went through a shift from being transport vehicles into massive beasts of machines. There was a market boom and the company realized they needed more management skills. They sold the company to Textron, which helped them grow faster and faster.

 

Company Growth

With the crash of the snowmobile industry in the 1980s, Textron wanted out. The Polaris® company president was told to sell it, but he instead led a buyout. With 100 workers and fierce determination, Polaris® repaid their debt to Textron ahead of schedule and continued innovating their product offering. In 1984, they expanded into the ATV market. In 1990, they became the first major U.S. firm to create a personal watercraft. With each new product offering, Polaris® kept up their iconic focus on quality, performance, and innovation.
